Kengoman's own secret method of making success a reality!

*This article is translated transcription of Kengo Yoshida's interview👇 on youtube.com.
Kengo Yoshida, or Kengoman, is a Japanese musician, instrumentalist, plastic artist, and dome architecture researcher. Also known as the developer and godfather of "Patica". After working on "Gourd Market", he is now living off the grid in a forest of Aso in Japan with his partner Nobu.

Kengoman Series
This 6th video in this series is a nightly conversation with Kengoman

- Kengoman, Kengoman just talked about a lot of things and there was "shift" as the key word?

Shift, yes

- I really sympathize with the word "shift" and was wondering if you could talk a little bit more about it in depth. Could you please do that?

Well, yes, shifting is a theme that I've been thinking about.

Changing my lifestyle was first of all a shift.
Materially, it's obvious.
I'd never lived in the woods before.
I'd never had a horse before.
When I lived like that, my surroundings got different, so they were a shift for me.
So my environment has shifted, but even after five years, I still don't know what's changed.

My friends told me that I've become a woodsman, like I said before.
I told them that I'm still the same person I was before.
I didn't feel like I had changed, but after six or seven years, those words were still in my head.
I thought it's nice to be a woodsman.
I was expecting to see myself changing in some way too.

And now that I look back on it, there really came a realization, or perhaps a flash of inspiration within me.
You know what, I always thought of life as a line. When something grows, it does in a line.
But do you know what the growth point of a plant is?

- The growth point.

When the sprouts come out, and then the leaves come out, and then the stems grow up, there's the point of growth, you know?
That is called a growth point, which includes a word 'point'.
I looked it up on the Internet.
And I found that there's a growth point on the root and on the tip of the trunk.
So I learned that it's a point where something grows.

That's where things a little difficult for me to get, had started.
I couldn't understand that it's a point or dot.
You see, when you look at a plant, the tip of the plant is a dot.
It means a dot creates the next dot, and it grows.
That is, from a dot, it'll certainly be two dots through cell division.
When another dot is born, it just pops out.

I suddenly had the image in my mind of a dot being popping out and born.
It made sense that growing point could certainly mean a cell division.
I realized cell division is about a dot.

- Is it an expression of creating something new?

Creating.
Time to be born.

For example, Taro Okamoto said "Art is an explosion."
When a dot grows, it's an explosion.
like boom, pop.

- So it's not a line.

It's not a line.

- Not a line but..

I used to think it's a line.
But it's actually a dot.

- So everything in life is a dot.

And at the same time, I wondered where the inspiration came from.
We've done a lot of things in our life, so I guess that can be where the inspiration comes from.
But inspiration is not a line.
Like a epiphany.
It just pops up.

- That's intuition.

Intuition?

- Intuition is so important nowadays.

Intuition doesn't seem to come slowly.
It comes suddenly.

- That's true.

The idea of dot had been a theme in my mind for about two years.
Before that, when I was playing the kalimba and singing or performing on stage, I started improvising. Not like practicing and singing my own songs, but I just get on stage with the kalimba and start singing.

I'm really attracted to the improvisation, and there are times when I can improvise and times when I can't.
So I tried to improvise as much as possible when I could.
When we were all playing together by the fire, I would improvise and play like "dong clang claang, ding clang claang" and say the words that came to my mind or use whatever melody came up at the time.
But it's scary to go out on stage with a lot of people and suddenly start improvising live, isn't it?

- Indeed.

And I began to think about what I'm afraid of.
I can't help but be anxious like "What if the melody doesn't come out in improvisation?" or "What if I can't sing?", and I always kept thinking deeply about this.

Even when I play kalimba by myself in my room, I would try to improvise.
And at the same time, I started to be aware that the growing point is a dot.
Like that I realized that there is something that emerges in the moment, just at the place.

I realized I am me in the moment, at the place, after all.
And the kalimba was a very important private instrument for me because it was easy to tune to it and play.
I didn't know if I'm tuning the kalimba or if I'm tuning my mind.
Both are right probably, there's a sense of fit that both are going together in tune.

And as I was playing the kalimba, I realized various things.
When I play like "clang", I'm listening to that sound.
Then the next note pops up in my head and I want to play it.
And when I play the second note, the relationship between two notes is born, and inspired by that, I'll go on to the third one.

While it goes in sequence, you concentrate on the point, dot, one note.
This time you focus on listening to it and go next.. Because you're listening to it, you get the next step.

The next step after that, the next three or two steps, you can't think about it at all, and there's no need to think about it.
I became be able to go 100% to the current step, I felt at ease and knew that it's the best thing to do.
I became more and more convinced that if I focus 100% on the current step, I can always see the next step.

And then one day I got like 'a dot thoughts'.
I was like, "I had a dot thoughts and I'm going to live with it."

Started from the kalimba and I've been trying to live with that for years now.
Aren't the animals pretty close to that? Don't you think that's what they're doing?

- Yes it is.

Right?

- Humans are always like get up in the morning, at the right time, and then start the job..

It's all fixed.

- It is.

At this time I have to finish eating, and at that time I have to leave the house.
Like that.
Like, "Or else I won't make it in time.", "I can't ride the usual rail."
That's just the way we humans see the world.
It's also a human's concept.

- It's a concept?

Shifting is actually about changing concepts.
It would be about changing concepts.
It's difficult to get out from or get rid of the concepts once, but I was very interested in it.

And then I realized we're in full of concepts.
That's what we've been living with since we were little.
But I thought like "wait a minute, it's not like that, if we take that away, we can see infinite ways."

But it's me to do that and I can't go two ways at once, and I don't feel like trying go both.
But my first step, the next step, and the next step after that can be done with my one step.
I thought I can do that and I'd give it a try.

Fortunately, I had been living by my own will before that.
So friends and folks were like, "Well, he's Kengoman, it can't be helped."

I know it sounds selfish, but I was trying to do what I wanted to do, and to say that I don't want to do if I don't want to.
I wanted to be light.

So what's the opposite of being light?
What do you think?

- The opposite of 'light'?

What does it mean to be heavy?
Being heavy means you have a heavy load on your back.
But if you unload it, you become light, right?

- That's right.

Relationships are big issue.
When you think about it, since you have ties, you can't say no, it's hard to turn down, all that keep you from being light.
Once you joined a project, you can't suddenly leave it, so you have to work on it until you reach the goal.

You are doing it because you wanted to do it, but what if there's something more important that you want to do right in front of you?
You have to give it up, if you go with the project.

I had not been doing that.
If I want to do something else, while I have what I wanted to do so badly, but something more attractive comes along, I'll choose it.

If you keep doing that, you're going to become lighter and lighter.
Relationships, too.

- But a lot of people can't do that in today's society.

I don't think they can.

- They have their job, of course.
And, you know, with all the relationships in today's society, it's hard do that in it.

That's what most of them say, and that's what they say is common sense, and what we're supposed to take for granted.

- That's concept.

Concept, I think that's a concept too.

- So it is.

Then there's no other way but to get away from that.
While I'm talking about dot-oriented things now, but people end up in "those who can do it are fine, but we can't."
No that's not right, I'm saying that you can do it, and if you don't do it, it won't change.

- For the first step, the first step to get rid of the concepts, if everyone is wondering how we can do that, where do Kengoman think we should start from?

Well, in Earth Village, it's pretty much in the direction of changing lifestyle, isn't it?

- Yes it is.

So, you know, in reality, it's a big problem because people think they have to earn money to survive.
People tend to think changing your life means like you have to stop earning money.

- Yes, certainly.

I quitted making money.
I mean, I quitted my job like just to make money.
So ideally, you do what you want to do, and you can live off of it.
If you could live doing what you want to do, that would be great.
What we have to shift is how we spend money, I think we have to shift our lives in relation to money.

Now I love my job, which makes my life worth living, is creative, and I love creating new things where there are none.
Earth Village is also trying to create something new where there is nothing, isn't it?
If that becomes your job, if you would live in a situation where you just work hard at it and get support from many people, that would be an ideal.

I'm not saying it's an ideal, but I think it's possible.
I don't know what is non-vague and specific things you should do.
Because people are suited to different things, so I'm doing like this, but I don't know what is good for others.

But I don't think we should give up on that, and I think each one of us has to take his or her step forward.
So one step, if it's a small step, even if it's a half step, if you take the next step forward, you should give it 100%.
Without hesitation, if there is any hesitation, the feeling and the energy that the person is giving off will be dispersed.

It doesn't have to be a big deal, just something that you want to do.
If you do that all the time, if you focus on that, I guess you'll see the next step.
I love creating something from zero to one.
It's fascinating to create something where there is nothing.
In these days, there is everything in this world. right?

But it's quite fascinating to create something that wasn't there before.
It's also about coming up with an idea, no matter how small, and wanting to try it yourself, and then actually doing it and having it show up.
It's the same with making things, and that's what I really like.

It's a synergistic effect that Katsumin makes a video of it and that can be seen by many people.
My work and what you have been doing and want to do in the future make 'one plus one is more than two.'

- Yes.

Perhaps.

- With Kengoman's thoughts and my thoughts together, 1+1 is not 2, but more power is born.

Yes, I certainly felt it.
And I actually go beyond me.

I'm already inspired by working with Katsumin on this filming.
I guess my inner self is happy with the synergistic energy.
It's bringing out from me something that I haven't had before.
I go beyond my normal self.
It's beyond me, so it's expanding, I can feel it.

- Well, I feel the same way.
I think Kengoman has brought out more of me than I did myself, and I really feel the same way.

Really? Then, if you spread this to as many people as possible, I'll come up with something more.

- And more and more dots will be exploding.

It'll explode. Yes, yes.
You know what, actually, you never know unless you try.
I mean, if you do it, you'll get a response.
When I get a response, I ride on that energy.
Then I send it out, and I get a response again.

You go as far as you can and I call it a synergistic effect.
I made a piece called "Synergy," a song.

- A song?

I know it has the power to create miracles in the future, and an infinite synergy or spiral.
I'm sure we've all had the experience of great conversation going on and on all night until morning.
Or you talked till morning and the next day you're tired and kind of lazy.
After all that synergy, you just end up saying, "That was fun yesterday, wasn't it?"
Nothing like that, it forms and creates what emerges next.

With Dot Thinking.
The first and second steps are crucial.
Don't think about the second and third steps.
If you go 100% on the second step, you'll see the next two steps.

- That's right.

That exactly is.
That's what I'd like to experience, together.

- Likewise.

With many people.

Maybe I stand up to the world's garbage problem

*This article is translation of Kengo Yoshida's post on note.com.
Kengo Yoshida is a Japanese musician, instrumentalist, plastic artist, and dome architecture researcher. Also known as the developer and godfather of "Patica". After working on "Gourd Market", he is now living off the grid in a forest of Aso in Japan with his partner Nobu.

It was around 1995 when I was confronted with the waste problem.
I participated in a trust movement to protect forests from waste from a final disposal site in the Tama area of Tokyo.
Then I began to think about the seriousness of the garbage problem.
"What is garbage❓" kept ringing in my head.

I learned in 1994 that there was no garbage until the Edo period.
In short, garbage has existed since we started drilling for oil‼️
Garbage.. it is something that is out of the earth's environment cycle.
It's man-made material.
It is something that only humans discharge.
It's a substance that won't go away forever‼️

At that time
Aja Addy, a West African Medicine Man and musician, came to OASIS in Hayama.

He brought an asalato as a gift and gave it to his friends, which I think was the first asalato in Japan.
I got it and kept playing it every day. I was hooked.
I was really into it. Then one day. I had a flash of inspiration from its sound like "Pati"‼️ and "Ka"‼️

Toy makers and musical instrument makers will turn this into plastic!
I got in a hurry. That's when the explosion💥 of inspiration came up of nowhere❣️
I thought I'm the one who have to do it.

Making this the first step of "plastic revolution"
should be a message from Africa. (I thought so on my own, and forced it into a story, and told many people that God is rooting for Patica.

I was a bit of a strange guy.)

One day.. a friend of mine met the president of a plastic processing company at a karaoke snack bar.
My friend showed him an asalato (a musical instrument made of West African nuts) and said to me, "He said, 'Let's make this into plastic'".
Yes.. I've got it! I went to see the president of the company immediately.

And so the first step was taken toward the plastic version.

🟢The conditions at that time were..
- Use recycled plastic‼️
- Once you buy it, you have to keep fixing it and make it last for years‼️
And this project meant to have..
- The theme of "Plastic Revolution"‼️

The original plastic was decided to be ABS because it is a material that can be repaired many times even when it's broken so you just buy it once. There was no other material like that.
A solvent (methylene chloride) is used to dissolve ABS, and ABS itself melts and becomes one piece❗️
It is readily available as an adhesive for ABS❗️
That's the reason to be chosen.

At first, when pachinko parlors replaced their playing machines, there were lump of milky-white ABS resin on the backside, so we collected them.
Two balls with 50mm diameter are connected to one with a string
and you hold one in each hand and shake them..
The balls are filled with pebbles, and it has three shaker sounds with two attack sounds.. This is a two-beat triplet‼️ This is surprising.
Because it's two-handed, you'll have a tremendous combination. And it produces an astonishing rhythm. As a drummer, it was such an exciting thing..
Wherever I go I always played it not only while I was driving, but moving by any vehicles, so I got better and better, and developed various techniques.
My friends were also very into it and addicted to it.
The plastic version project started after we got so into it, so this completely made pages in my life story.

One day.. I received a phone call from the president of the company.
I was asked "Name the instrument cuz we'll be interviewed."
I instantly answered "Patica". It came up like "Pati❗️", and "Ka❗️".

Members of OASIS was the ones who decided to call african version asalat.
In Africa, it's called Keskes, Kesun Kesun or Thelevi..
They called it Batica too, and I thought Batica was also nice.
So I decided to call it PATICA with a plastic "P".

It was me who named it PATICA..
and spells too. Isn't it good❓
I heard that even in Africa some people call it Patica now.

It's finally time to start the Patica story.

It was hard to sell around because there was no thing like YouTube back then.. We demonstrated in many places. TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, all kinds of media picked up on it.

Various companies came forward and did various things.

In the end.. all the companies forgot about the "Plastic Revolution".
I said "God is rooting for Patica" at a meeting, and they thought what a jerk I was😆👍🤣
"You don't know what that means. You will burn yourselves if you badly touch me‼️" I thought to myself.

Finally, they pulled out of the Patica business.

I parted ways with my friends at that time.
Then I went on my own.
I guess it was more about making money than "Plastic Revolution".
Everyone was like that.. and I started to be aware of Germany at this time. Because Germany is very conscious about environmental issues.
But I didn't have a clue.. I decided to wait for the right time.
At that time.. an acquaintance introduced me to DJ HI-C (KIREEK).
HI-C is amazing guy.. He is the overwhelming winner of the world scratch DJ competition.

He connected me to a certain company with a building in Ginza through his backstage.
It was a very impressive company. HI-C and I went straight to the president's office and sat down on the sofa. The company, which is in general plastics business and has several overseas companies that also do plastics processing, took care of everything from making the molds to manufacturing the products.
I saved up all the money to pay for it.
It cost one million yen just to make one mold..

At that time, I was able to get a share of the hemp plastic through a certain channel.
And that's how I made the 30% hemp and 70% ABS plastic Hemp Patica.

That company made hemp Patica a few times.
But they stopped making it after employees complained that it made the plant smell super stinky. It must have been the smell of burning plants combined with the smell of plastic. I think it's better than plastic though.
So I was wondering what to do❓
And then the materials was stopped sharing too. Big shock⁉️
One misfortune rides upon another's back. I was in tears and bee stung😭🐝

Just when you think it's the end, Kengoman decides to make his own hemp plastic‼️ How awesome👍👏👏👏👏👏
I heard a ring in my head, and "If you know it's possible to mix hemp with ABS, then do it‼️"
And then..
I spent a million yen and I have the mold, didn't I❓
I just had to find the hemp material and a processing plant.

Around that time.. I learned about Fumikazu Masuda of Tokyo Zokei University https://youtu.be/tlK5J90E_Lg on TV, who is called a pioneer of plastic, and I was thinking to make an appointment with him.
One day, I handed a flyer of Patica to a student of Tokyo Zokei University who came to an event, and told that I wanted to make an appointment with Professor Masuda. The next year, I gave it to a female professor at Tokyo Zokei University and told her to give it to Professor Masuda.

And then.. the time had come‼️
In the crowd at Earth Day Tokyo (at Yoyogi Park), someone patted me on the back. I turned around and he asked me "Are you Mr. Kengo Yoshida❓." I said "yes", then he said "I'm Masuda of Tokyo Zokei University."
What⁉️ Why.. you visit me.. Such a surprise made me so happy that I felt like falling over.

The professor said, "Please take a look at our seminar's booth"..
I was guided to the booth and saw the various items on display.. He told me many things about plastics.. and listened to me about my various thoughts.

The professor asked me if I would come to his university.
A few days later, I took my dog (Pochi) and Nobu (human) on my motorcycle and went to the university.
I thought I could talk about a lot of things, so I followed the professor and where I was taken to was his classroom.
I was suddenly introduced in front of many students there and I was to be the lecturer for an hour (I was so good at improvising that I transformed into Kengoman the dreadlocks professor‼️👍😆).

Though it was a weird feeling like I was taken in,
there I did..
The hour-long class went by in a blur, as I babbled on and on about plastic and the garbage problem.. I showed instruments and accessories I made from the waste on the spot, the professor and students bought many of them. (Kengoman transformed again into an seller at a festival night stall😆👍)

Next.. we all moved to audiovisual room for a Patica lecture.
(I once again transformed into the "Let's play with Kengoman" a fun rhythm play guy😆👍)

It was a big hit.

After that.. I went to the university office, not the student affairs office, and got 27,000 yen for that day's lecture😆👍(unexpected)

And then.. I went to the cafeteria with the professor and discussed with him over curry.
He introduced me to a plastic processing factory.
And there.. the original hemp plastic was born.

I finally have my own original hemp plastic material.

Now that I have it, I will use Patica to spread it all over the world.
I was so excited to see how many things would be created with hemp plastic.

The flyer for Patica made from hemp plastic is..

It says "Hemp Patica is the first step in Plastic Revolution. By mixing 30% hemp with raw materials, we have achieved a drastic reduction of ABS resin.
Through Patica, we want many people to think about the plastic problem! By spreading Patica, we want to support people researching eco plastics! Let's! communicate PATICA!
However.. I have not been able to meet researchers and developers.

That's how it's been so far..

I was lucky because at least I got the mold.. but we still had to find the right mix of materials.. adjust the humidity and temperature.. test when the prototypes had made.. and so on. Although it was hard because the company was so far away.. we managed to produce a product..
And so the Patica story continued. Isn't that great❓ (Big thanks to Professor Masuda)
I managed to do something, didn't I? Up to this point. Up to this point.. actually.

But you know what.. It was after this point that I decided to write this note.
I suddenly couldn't get in touch with the company.
I've got a few phone numbers, but they're all disconnected.
I had a bad feeling about this.
So I looked them up on the internet and.. My hunch was right, they went bankrupt.
And now.. I'm like "What should I do❓"😔

Normally, this would be the end of the story.
But I've been looking around on the internet and found out.. it seemed the bankrupt company was transferred to a different person without modification.. and with someone else as the president of the company
so they are still in existence with a different name.
I immediately called the new company.
And I asked for an estimate of how much it would cost to have them make the molds from scratch and make the hemp Patica materials again.
The other day I got a reply and when I opened the envelope, I was surprised⁉️ to see that is very expensive😞

It includes the cost of the mold.
I don't have enough money.
So the company makes the mold and then divides it by the first lot.
The company calculates on the assumption that they make at least two pieces, so if I ask for one piece, they have to tie up the machine for twice as long.
Are you with me❓

That's why I can't say anything too strongly about it😔

I told them that they would lose the order.

And I told about what I have done so far.. the concept.. how the global environment is getting worse every year..
and spoke my thoughts about the "Plastic Revolution".

When I looked up this company on the internet
I found the statement of the president who stood up for the environment, and told him that I nicely got how he felt.
And so it went..
The president gradually opened up in the conversation, which made me happy.

I said, "I'll think about it a little bit," and hung up the phone.
In the next phone call

🟡I'm thinking of talking to him that it should be a different line of work.
I think I'll say, "Why don't we work together for the environment?"
"We won't make money, but we will make good for the environment"..
"Well, if we don't start the 'plastic revolution,' no matter how much money we have, it's not going to work."

Now I have about 200 sets of hemp Patica orders a year from Germany.
The music shop is called "Dan Moi".

They seemed to plan to sell Patica to the world..
They asked me "Would you give us a discount if I placed an order for 10,000 sets❓"
I told him, "Whether it's 10,000 sets or 1,000,000 sets, no matter how much the number increases, the wholesale price will remain the same.. The current price is the cost of materials, processing, and assembly. Cuz we can't use ultrasonic welding machines for assembly and it's done by hand."
That's what hemp Patica is.. Hey, that's the truth.
In the first place, I would be inundated if I received an order for 10,000 sets.
I'd have to start a "Hemp-Patica home industry club" (I think that would be fun too👍).
So.. the product itself is out of current date.. You see❓
Maybe God is rooting for it.

🟢Hempati will save the world‼️
The world begins to change and a revolution in mindset starts by people involved in Hempati.. new alternatives to plastics will be created.
The world's landfills will have less waste.. reducing environmental impact..
A new economy will emerge where the environment business will profit‼️

I want to share the message and concept from Hempati and the history of it
and think about the future together on Twitter with my readers.

Anyway.. I had to remember the timeline and change the order many times while writing,
it was so hard to add a lot.

And now one more thing to add🤭.. I remembered something I forgot to write.

Hemp Patica was made of 50% hemp and 50% ABS resin along the way, which was a drastic material revolution.
This got well again👍 We finally reduced the use of petroleum raw materials to half, that we did‼️

From now on, we are aiming for 100% biodegradable Patica that will return to the nature.
What will happen❓ What will we do about it❓ That's the way it is😞 Kengoman's thinking.

So far, the number of people who enjoy Patica seems to be increasing little by little, and sales are leveling off.
Maybe it will become a culture just like Kendama.
Rhythm on it is the best, and to learn right hand-left hand combination it's the best to do when you are a small child.
It will develop a sense of rhythm naturally👍
When my kids were in elementary school, they used to ride unicycles with Patica in hand, and it was a big hit at school.
It was like a circus👍

Now it hit me...
I'm thinking of talking to Dan Moi in Germany too.

🟡 I'm going to say, "it should be a different line of work."
I'm thinking of asking him, "Would you like to work with me for the environment?"
I wanna say, "We're not going to make money, but it will be lucrative for the environment."
"Well, if we don't start a 'plastics revolution,' no matter how much money we have, it won't matter."

I.. would like to connect with the world with concepts🙇
I look forward to working with you.. Thank you.

What a surprise❣️ Living here doesn't cost 70,000 yen. Do you believe that's for the two of us?!

*This article is translation of Kengo Yoshida's post on note.com.
Kengo Yoshida is a Japanese musician, instrumentalist, plastic artist, and dome architecture researcher. Also known as the developer and godfather of "Pachika". After working on "Gourd Market", he is now living off the grid in a forest of Aso in Japan with his partner Nobu.

Living here means...
We bought the land with cash, so it costs zero.
The house we live in is a tent I made myself.
There is no water, electricity, gas, or other infrastructure in the forest
so it's off-grid.

[Water] We have a stream from the water source, so all the water needs are supplied by that.

[Electricity] is provided by a stand-alone solar panel system.

[Gas] We have no shortage of firewood because we live in a forest.

[Daily necessities] For example... I don't buy soap, tissue, wraps, aluminum foil, etc. Then you'll come up with questions like how about this, or that But I probably don't buy it.
Basically, I don't want to increase the amount of garbage.
I store the year's trash in the storage shed.

And... I take it to the clean center once a year.
Most of the garbage for the year is vinyl, and the processing fee is about 350 yen (like $3).
That's about a mini truckload.

For example... I've never used tissues or anything else in the bathroom.
I wash my buttocks by hand using a 500ml plastic bottle of water
And wipe with a hand towel.
In fact, once you get used to this, you can't say your butt is clean if you wipe it with a tissue.

I can wash my hand clean too. No problem if I lick it😋

When I go shopping... and think, "Ah?? should I buy this?"
after that I think,"No... I'm gonna make this."
For example brooms, dust trimmers, and so on. Also Slippers.

[Food cost] I go to supermarket once in a while (less than once a week, but a few times a month).

I eat wild vegetables and grass much more than most people.
Grass tempura is especially delicious this time of year😋
There are plenty of edible grasses.

Bamboo shoots, bracken, royal ferns, etc. I remove astringent taste and pickled in salt or oil.
I make enough for a year.

Smoked bamboo shoots in oil are so delicious😋 If you only have it it's enough for a meal.

I'm so into preserving food, but if I start talking about fish or meat, that'll be all I say this time, so I'll leave it to your imagination.

Next... [Other expenses] My mobile bill is a little over 6,000 yen for the phone and iPad.
The rest is probably about 140,000 yen for the car inspection and insurance for two cars.
Divided by two years, that's 10,000 yen per month.

We rarely go out, so the gasoline bill will never be more than 10,000 yen per month.

The total monthly cost so far is... the cost of car maintenance, communication, gasoline, and what else❓...

If you have read this far, you probably understand it's not common.
"I and Nobu living on 70,000 yen(like $550) a month" is just comfortablly accomplished actually.
But what if I get sick
Or what if I get injured❓ That’s a whole other story.
I want you to understand that this(a life without money) is not what we are aiming for.

It's totally different from life in town.
It's hard to imagine, isn't it?
Imagining what life was like in the old days, what life was like for the Indians, what life was like in the Amazon backcountry❓ and so on,
I've started my own life.
When it rains, the stream becomes a muddy river.
I can't tell you how many times my pipes have been washed away...
Typhoons have blown away our tents and destroyed our huts.
Each time, we have to think of countermeasures and take action.
Real work is essential.

Here's what's different from town life! This is what makes it different.
You always have to work, and money doesn't help.
You just have to do it yourself.
In the heavy rain... In the middle of the night, even when it's freezing cold and gets your hands numb, something you have to do always occurs.
At that time, All I can do is to think that somewhere on earth, something much more serious is ocurring.
And I do work with that in mind.
If I don't do it, it will be even worse.
Living in the forest like that...
changes my skills... Spirit... Personality...
before I knew... Probably.
I'll be a forest man.
And from the forest, I'll be the voice of the forest
And will have a synergistic effect with the people in town.

My THANK YOU feeling is about to explode

*This article is translation of Kengo Yoshida's post on note.com.
Kengo Yoshida is a Japanese musician, instrumentalist, plastic artist, and dome architecture researcher. Also known as the developer and godfather of "Pachika".
After working on "Gourd Market", he is now living off the grid in a forest of Aso in Japan with his partner Nobu.

I tweet what I want on Twitter.
One day... it's shot into my place.
Sometimes even cash.

The letters and DMs attached say encouragement for the Gourd Market.
I wish I could publish them all someday.
I call them "treasure chests" and keep carefully.
Sometimes... I look into it and charge my "thank you"... I think I should call it my charger...

More than half of the visitors are Koreans. Lots of kids too.
The Koreans returned to their home once, but after they heard that the market building camp was extended for another month, some of them started to come back again.
Many people come and go, so I don't have the total number of participants, but there were probably about 60 Koreans joined.
Actually we were supposed to have about 40 people from Taiwan, but their presidential election started... and after that we had to cancel the camp for the Covid pandemic.

This Gourd Market building camp started on December 25th of the year before last.
It will soon be a year and a half.

More than 50 people from Korea came and spent two months, and when March rolled around, the world was in a Covid frenzy😞
The Gourd Market building camp 🏕 ended there.
From then... until today, there are only those who remain.

We're going all out to develop the Gourd Market.
Because I feel that the world is facing a crisis.

"This is different from the past" is ringing in my head.
All sides... I feel like I'm surrounded 360 degrees.

We can't go on like this. The global environment is deteriorating at an alarming rate.
There are so many endangered species.

What a horrible thing to say... 40,000 species of plants and animals are going extinct in one year!!

That's terrible news. In my mind, it's a life expectancy sentence.
But... Humans, the endangered species, don't take it seriously😞

If we remain like that, it will come... or I should say it's already here.

Please everyone, let's start together!! let's build it together!!
That's what "Gourd Market" is all about...
I can't get this through to people... I know that's reasonable though😞

In the midst of such a situation... it's fun that I can't give up at all.
On the contrary... I keep feeling a clear sense of "living" right here, right now.
This is something that has never happened before.
I think this feeling may be an instinct of life in the age of destruction⁉️
If that's the case... I start to think... let's see how the instincts are manifested.
This is so interesting.
Cuz it's something I've never had in my mind before.

I came to feel like that... actually, a while after this camp started.
Gradually, I started to feel a strange interest... and to think about it.
Every time I come to it... I talked about it to my sons... Nobu... and Satsuki, who was nearby then, and I realized.
I was heading for a world I don't even know yet.
This may be the "Gourd Market".
So, I gave it my all... or I came to relax and throw myself into it🙆

There are many things to do at all times... making a space... gathering materials... tools... foods... fuel... it's everything about survival.
Sometimes I'm exhausted moving around all day long, thinking I don't have enough time at all.
Or I come to tell myself "Calm down, My Mind."
Such a lot of heart experience☺️

And so... In Covid disaster I keep thinking about what I need to do to survive.
I make rocket stoves 🚀 or kalimbas to earn the necessary expenses.
But if I spend too much time on these things, I can't make progress on the Gourd Market...
But if I don't do that, I have to worry about the repair cost of the yumbo... the car inspection fee... the cell phone bill... or the horse feed... and so on.
While I go back and forth between the two...
donations are shot in from twitter... And even foods, clothing, and stationery...

Some who bought a rocket stove 🚀 paid more than the price... Someone who I have no idea who it was shot money into my bank account...
I couldn't even deliver a word of thanks... I was genuinely thankful and made a nice catch.
So many people shot things to me with thankful words...
We are like over-packaged bombs wrapped in unexpectedly positive and warm hearts.

This was even more amazing than I thought it would be... I’m dying to convey this strange unresolvable feelings that I don't want to resolve...
It's totally new!!
I come to think this is a new economy❓
This is the new energy❓
Or Dalai Lama❓... I'm sorry, Dalai Lama came up... When I think about "compassion" Dalai Lama comes to my mind.
"Thank you" is directly connected to "compassion" for some reason...
I put this aside to take time to think later but...

My THANK YOU feeling is about to explode💥. This is what I mean.

This is a phenomenon where imagination exceeds reality...
All the people at the Gourd Market talk about it all the time.

And... We are thinking and talking about how and where to direct this feeling (full of positive energy).

We are thinking about what we should do
and... what is a nice catch.

I inform the Gourd Market is progressing with such energy❣️

P.S. We are about to move our camp from here in Miyazaki's Tsuno town to "Aso Forest" (Sato's Forest).
"Sato" is... the name of Nobu's grandma who passed away 6 years ago.
I will write about why "Aso Forest" is "Sato's forest" in the next note.

I want you definitely to read the next note.
It's a miracle type story.

I've decided to write note too

*This article is translation of Kengo Yoshida's post on note.com.
Kengo Yoshida is a Japanese musician, instrumentalist, plastic artist, and dome architecture researcher. Also known as the developer and godfather of "Pachika", living off the grid in a forest of Aso in Japan.

Twitter is great!
You can connect with people far away in this Covid-19 disaster.
It's.. great because it gives me energy!
Right now I'm spending a year and a half camping at Gourd Market in Miyazaki Prefecture's Tsuno Town!
Soon I will move to Aso Forest, my home base.
Basically, I've been in isolation since last March.. trying to avoid meeting people.
So.. I can take my time and think about things in a simple way.

Twitter is great in such situation too.
It's a window.. where I can see what I want to see.. look for things.. and call out to people.
Wandering around, and I can go to all sorts of places.
And.. At some point, I tweet what I want.
And then.. one day someone shoots it in my place.
Sometimes it's even cash.. It made me so happy.
I'm going to say this just lightly here, but.. (I'm going to write another note for this.)
To say this in brief.. I'm about to explode💥 with my "THANK YOU" feelings.
This is a first for me.. So I'm going to write a note again.

I fled from Kanto to Kyushu after 3.11 and stayed 2 years getting the blues.
I came up with the idea of creating Gourd Market.. It's been 8 years now.
I've been thinking about the Gourd Market for a looong time
and about the key word "new economy".

When I think of "new economy".. It goes beyond the economy.
Cuz.. I've realized that I can't start without destroying the existing concepts.
Various things started to fall apart in my mind.
It's interesting and fun.. I got my energy back.

For example.. Getting what you need.. The concept of possession.. Equivalent exchange.. Gifts.. and so on and on, infinitely.
We think about food, clothing, and shelter in order to live.. In modern civilization, it is obvious that money💴💰 is all we need to have them.
So.. I thought. My intuition tells me that the natural environment is being destroyed at an ever-increasing rate.
The air, the water, the soil, it's all being polluted.
This makes it impossible.. for living things to survive.
The environment will be destroyed because we want money😞

Creating the gourd market is something I will continue as long as I live.
This means I found something to look forward to.
It's a collaborative work.

New things will come out of it!!
They'll come one thing after another.
Sometimes it's something that's been there before but.. Because it's born now
It's new.

"To think about everything again by myself".. That makes me feel good.
In my head it's like that now.
Like thinking with my own head about everything.
I think it's time for all of us to do that.

The world of Kengo Yoshida

*This is translation of Kengo Yoshida's profile and statement from kengoma.com.

Kengo Yoshida

After the nuclear accident of 3.11
I suddenly shifted to what I want to live like someday in my imagination.
Four and a half years have passed since then, and I have gotten used to living in a self-made dome tent, using solar power, water from the mountains, and firewood in the forests of Aso.
A "new world" has begun!

Between the world struggling in a system breaking down
and the exciting, vibrant world where I infuse my own experience,
I feel it's time for a shift.
From now on, every day is a strategy meeting! The same vector with the people I meet causes a synergistic phenomenon that has never been seen before!
We notice it by "synergistic effect".
"synergistic effect" inspires us.
"synergistic effect" makes us connect with each other!
"synergistic effect" makes miracles happen!

The reason why I want to create Gourd Market

*This is translation of Kengo Yoshida's post from kengoma.com.
Gourd Market is his suspended project because of Covid-19, but it's still worth knowing and spreading :D
After reading this, you'll find such a lively and fun way to get out of the world at dead end.
If we have energy and synergy, it's not desparate effort at all! :D

This civilization will die.
Me and my people will survive.
Because we know we will perish.
Because we prepare before we perish.

It's materially, physically, spiritually and environmentally collapse.
Material and environment can be destroyed by natural and man-made disasters.
But we can still protect our body and spirit❗️

I imagine a new market.
By imagining, everything can be solved.

We cannot live alone.
We have to be connected by trust❗️
Absolutely we do.
Everything cannot be the same anymore at all.
Somewhere along the way, from over 3,000 years ago to the present day, things went wrong.
The way of economy, energy, food, clothing, housing, medic, education, politics all went wrong.
Human has become selfish and preoccupied with making money.
Sustaining this way became no longer possible.

Some people have already realized this.
But do they really believe that we might be going to die?
I'm quite doubtful.
I️'m really going to build a market because we are really going to perish‼
Can we survive if only we have food and water❓
Chickens and pigs can live in cages if the conditions are right.
But humans can't.
In a village in Africa, it is said that "a village that stops playing music is a dead village."
They say that the most important necessities of life is clothing.
Clothing is not for protection from the cold, but for pleasure, for decoration.
Even today, in the remote parts of the world, the indigenous people who live the old way of life wear fancy ornaments.
We've never forgotten that.
Do the people of today, who are so busy with their daily lives that they only go to work and home, enjoy music and decoration❓
What is "living truly" in our memory❓❓
I belive it's pleasure.

The time of "me and you together!!" will come.
Because we can't live alone.

That's why we want to create a new market.
Life is "Living Lively".
Gourd Market is about "Live".
"Living" is its theme.

Let me talk about foreign and domestic currency at one-tenth rate.
What would happen if prices were one-tenth in the "Gourd Market"❓
People would rush to the market and all the article would be sold out immediately.
Because safe and secure food and daily necessities are all here.
Customers from outside will be buying up everything, deals close everywhere in a flash, cuz they can get their hands on at one-tenth the price.
They'll come from all over the country, all over the world to stock up.
And you'll have a lot of small change, even if you think you've made a profit, it's only a tenth of what they pay outside.
So the "Gourd Market" people barter goods or buy them by domestic currency before the market opens.
You sell the leftovers to customers for a tenth of the price.
At the same time exchange works within "Gourd Market".
If you don't have enough goods to survive in "Gourd Market", you have to buy outside.
Buying outside is 10 times more expensive than inside❗️
But don't forget, it's a dying world out there.
The Gourd Market is built to keep living in the first place❗️
It needs to be established as soon as possible❗️
The birth pains won't last forever.
We need to create them all at once❗️
The "limits of capitalist economic growth" have been known for decades.
We have to somehow overcome the dilemma hard to get out of.
It's only a matter of time❗️
Foreign currencies collapse and "Gourd Market" has a domestic currency.
Domestic currency is convenient, barter is also convenient.
And this is where you think gift is the goal...
Vector is gift in the end, and "Gourd Market" will survive lively❗️
"Gourd Market" will be cradle of spiritual economy.
We can do it with good guys like you❗️
Bad guys, please don't mimic.
If you have any questions or doubts about what I've said so far, please feel free to ask me.
I'll solve all the problems anyway.
I imagine this every day even if people don't care.
If we can't solve the problems here
"Gourd Market" will never be a reality.
Let's put heads together and figure it out however hard it is.
This process will be our fortune.

The point is from what and how we actually start.
I want you to realize that the process is the key❗️
Don't get confused by that foreign and domestic currency things.
The first goal is to get the necessities of life into "Gourd Market."
I want you to think about what you need.
Once we have it, everything is in sight.
Then we go on to balance supply and demand.
Anyway, the first priority is that the people in "Gourd Market" become at ease.
From babies to old people, from birth to funerals.
We have to cooperate to start from what we can do and what we can ask your friends and acquaintances to do in our respective positions❗️

It's very rewarding.
It makes life worth living.
Yes, we will experience the whirlpool of synergies.
And you will realize that this creates unlimited power.
This is the "spiritual economy"❗️
And miracles happen❗️
That's what everyone feels real.
"The energy of realizing" causes the synergies.
This makes reality.
It's an organism called "us".
We've been living selfishly for so long that we've come to realize the limits of growth.
We can't get out of it with the same concepts we had before.
Einstein said.
"You can't solve a problem with the same mindset you had when the problem arose".
Then the only way is to change our mindset.
Selfish energy has created capitalism as we know it today❗️
Can communism create "synergistic energy"? I would say no.
It is impossible, for the human mind for now is selfish anyway.
If those who understand this do not give up, and move toward hope, they will be able to go beyond the personal and selfish mind, and they will choose a synergistic path that will lead them beyond their current selves.
Sooner or later, they will begin to realize.

The selfish world cannot be made over.
And because it can't be, you suffer.
In the end, you shall choose the way only you can survive.
But not for "us".
We will let go of our selfishness and synergize with our self-awareness.
The realizing that comes over us is a joy like we've never felt before❗️
The energy of that joy causes a spark❗️
And then it synergize.
And then miracles happen❗️
Is there nothing to fear❓
We shall find "us" that have reached that level then.
And we'll know we're ascending quietly at the point.
For now, we can only imagine.
Imagine every detail as real as it can be.
We can break through any obstacle, any harm❗️
Break through❗️
Bring forth❗️Create❗️Exodus❗️
Yes, it's an exodus from the dying Babylon❗️❗️❗️❗️

Georgian & Thai Massage in Tbilisi

There are some reasonable massages in Tbilisi.

Many of them are Thai massage, but others are Georgian.

I tried both of them, so I want to introduce the place where I actually went.

By the way, I absolutely recommend Thai massage.

スポンサーリンク

- How's Georgian massage?

While walking the streets, a sign that says 'Georgian Massage' caught my eyes.

There are many Thai massage, but Georgian is a rare thing.

I'm in Georgia, and I've experienced Thai massage a lot in Thailand before, so I wanted to try local one.

Massage chain Deuxe

In Tbilisi, there is a chain of Georgian massage shops called Deluxe.

(By the way I've never seen Georgian massage other than Deluxe.)

The shop I visited was in Rustaveli, the one across the street from a Thai massage.

There is also one along Kote Afkhazi Street east of Liberty Square.

I can't remember the place, but I think I've seen it somewhere else too.

VERY soft massage

This Georgian massage is very soft!

I had a 30 minute Back & Shouder massage (25 lari), and was wondering if they breaststroke on my back after pouring oil on it.

I felt no push at all, it was to me, just rubbing.

Anyway it was so good for the body hardened during the lockdown, and I almost fell asleep.

To be honest, I think it's too soft for Japanese people, but it might be good for those who prefer to have a gentle massage.

- The best Thai massage in Tbilisi

スポンサーリンク

I heard there is a Thai community in Tbilisi, and in fact there are Thai restaurants and massages all over the place in Tbilisi.

I visited the massage where a Japanese resident in Tbilisi told me, and it was actually very good.

Some Thai massages are weird

But some Thai massage shops, to be honest, seem to be weird place.

Though the technique of the massage is sure, but there is often another offer afterwards.

So it can be misleading to say that you got a Thai massage.

Georgian massage is a little too soft for me, so I hope it doesn't cause that kind of mislead (^_^;)

Very good Thai massage near Liberty Square

But there is a place that offers normal massage with high level of technique.

It's called Golden Fingers THAI Massage.

It's located in the center of the city, a short walk from Liberty Square.

Despite such a good location, the price is the same as other places, 60 GEL for one hour massage.

I tried to bargain for a price, but it didn't work (^_^;)

The room was air-conditioned and clean.

I ordered 'Royal Thai Massage', which is like a mix of oil and Thai massage.
It actually made me feel very light!

Good after-service

The service after massage is good as well.

They offer you free tea and bottled water.

Moreover, they also give away a free mask, which I think is nice for the situation at the moment.

There is WiFi in the lobby, so you can relax and check information with a cup of tea.

So I really recommend Golden Finger.

I tried both Georgian and Thai massage, but I preferred Thai massage by far.

You have to pay $18 for one hour massage while it costs only 100 baht ($3) in Thailand, but it's still not too expensive.

I don't know about any other Thai massage than Golden Finger, but heard that the techniques are adequate everywhere else.

11 good cafes for nomad workers in Tbilisi

Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, has cafes everywhere.

I always need good ones for nomad work with:

  • Air conditioning
  • WiFi
  • Power supply

I've been in Georgia for half a year and explored various cafes for work, and found some good ones for nomad workers :)

スポンサーリンク

- My favorite cafes in Tbilisi

Let me introduce my favorite cafes in Tbilisi.

Whether in the middle of the tourist center or in a residential area, there is cafes perfect for nomad work and relaxing as well.

Cool and relaxing cafe in the old town

There is a cafe chain called 'Entree' in Tbilisi.

I often go to Entree located just off Liberty Square, which is the center of the old town.

They have not only coffee but various patisserie as well.

I always work alone, though there are many couples :(

Air conditioning, WiFi and some seats have power also, so it's very good for digital work.

American 5 lari, this latte 7 lari.

This stylish place with good air-condition makes it easy to get work done.

Sometimes the air conditio is too cold, so you might want to take your jacket with you if you're going to stay for a long time.

There are some tables and seats outside, so you might as well move there.

A swanky cafe in Rustaveli

I think the best cafe in Tbilisi, a bit out of the old city, is Stamba Cafe in the hotel of the same name.

The inside of this cafe is very stylish and has air conditioning and WiFi.

Power also available in some seats.

Swanky and spacious, but not too expensive.
4.72 lari for American, including tax and service charge.

Nice and on point that it comes with water too, which not many cafes do at this price.

On sunny days, the outside seating is so nice and I definitely recommend it!

In addition, the library in the hotel lobby is also very stylish.

Hmmm, I think this is my favorite cafe in Tbilisi!

I would go there more if it were closer.

Cafe at the famous Fabrika

There is a famous and fashionable hostel in Tbilisi.

It's called "Fabrika" and has a stylish cafe with air-conditioning and a lot of people there who seem nomad workers.

So pop :)

And spacious and relaxing.

Coffee isn't expensive, 7 lari for a latte.

They also serve burgers and other foods, and Fabrika has food complex beside with a ramen shop so it's good place to eat as well.

Nomad cafe in Tbilisi's residential area

Skola, which recently moved from Rustavelli near the old town to Vake in the residential area, is also a typical cafe for nomads.

The best thing here is that they have an official in charge of soothing during work!

Looks like this inside.

Stylish and perfect social distance.

I think cappuccino at 5 lari is pretty cheap!

Yes coffee is always a good idea :)

Vake is a bit hard to go by public transportation, but I highly recommend it to digital nomads living nearby.

- Cafes in the mall at Liberty Square

スポンサーリンク

Liberty Square Metro station is located in the middle of the old town.

The station building is a shopping mall called Galleria and has relatively expensive shops in it.

But as for cafes, it's in the normal price range so I recommend this place as well.

Spacious Illy Cafe

One of good cafes in the mall is Illy's.

The restaurant is spacious and pleasant.

American coffee is 5.78 lari including 18% VAT, which is not high for this mall.

The air conditioning and WiFi are good, but I just couldn't find a power supply here.

The clerk didn't say anything if I work for a long time, but the power is the only problem.

Ideal for nomadic work, Coffeesta

The mall has one of cafe chains in Tbilisi called Coffeesta.

They have several chain shops in Tbilisi, but only let us use terrace seats because of the COVID virus, so you can't have air conditioning.

But Galleria is a mall, so it is air-conditioned off course.

WiFi is available and there are some seats with power.

American at 3.8 lari is the cheapest range except shops like McCafe.

Cappuccino is 4.5 lari.

This is the place I use the most for work because it's so cheap and has everything you need: air conditioning, WiFi, and power supply.

- Cafes with super fast WiFi in Tbilisi

スポンサーリンク

The WiFi in Tbilisi cafes is usually just normal, but not so fast.

But in some cafes, it's pretty fast.

Fashionable little cafe with super fast wifi

PinPon cafe in my neighborhood is very nice and small and stylish.

From the outside, it looks like an ordinary cafe in town.

But it's so nice and cozy inside.

The water in bottle is already stylish, and it's the first time I had basil and cucumber water.

Not cold water, but the cucumbers cooled my body, which was great for Georgia's pretty hot summer.

Air-conditioned, but the windows were open and it's so soothing.

Had fast WiFi and power supply for all the seats.

Also, the waitress had a great smile and their hospitality was wonderful, which is not so common in Georgia.

I worked very comfortably while drinking 6 lari cappuccino.

Cool Cafe in suburb

There is a cozy COFFEE LAB, in the suburban residential area of Saburtalo.

Located in a park, looks very pleasant.

The cafe is stylish and air-conditioned, has fast WiFi.
You'll have power supply at some seats.

But the WiFi regularly (every 2 hours?) cuts off.

Latte is 8 lari, a little more expensive than other cafes.

But well, it's only $2.5, cheaper than Starbucks in Japan.

If you ever go to Saburtalo, go ahead and try it.

Restaurant you can use as a cafe

BERNARD Sushi is located on a street with trendy restaurants just off Liberty Square.

Power supply lined up at the end seats are just for nomads!

The wall behind the seats is also good as no one can peek while working.

Coffee is 5 lari for an American plus 10% service charge.

The WiFi is super fast, and I appreciate the price of coffee for such an luxuary restaurant.

There's also a seat on the second floor, so you might be able to be more private and focus on your work.

Next time I visit, I want to try the seat at the second floor.

- Very cheap Cafes in Tbilisi

スポンサーリンク

If you are looking for just cheap cafe, there are places that serve coffee for 2 lari~.

Yes, they are the Carrefour and McDonald's of the world ;)

Cafe at Carrefour

The cafeteria in Carrefour in Liberty Square is the cheapest cafe with air conditioning.

American, latte and cappuccino are all 2 lari.

The price is achieved by the thorough rationalization so you help yourself and get coffee from vendor machine.

But they still have decent power supply at the seats.

But huge problem is the WiFi.
You have to use Carrefour's WiFi here, but I've never been able to (^_^;)

It's fatal for nomad workers so I don't use this cafe most of the time.

If you want to take a break and charge your phone at a cheap air-conditioned place, it's fine.

McDonald's has coffee and WiFi

The cheapest but usable place is Mac Cafe.

I have nomad-worked at McDonald's at Marjanishvili, off course they had air-conditioning and WiFi worked normally.

American is 2.85 lari, not as cheap as Carrefour, but still about $1.

But I think it's a bit noisy with a lot of kids.

There's no power, so I'd rather pay another 30 cents and go to CoffeeSta.

There are a few McDonald's in Tbilisi, so it's a good place to take a break on the road.

So Tbilisi has all kinds of cafes like:

  • Stylish and relaxing
  • Good for nomad work
  • Super cheap
